MEET THE STAFF
Coach Girsch has spent 20 years as a college football coach, and will begin the 2019 season as his first full season as the Head Coach of the Rams. He has been the defensive coordinator of the Rams for the last five seasons. Prior to joining Angelo State University, Girsch had spent 18 years coaching at St. Ambrose University, with his last six as the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. He was named the MSFA Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 2008. He is a graduate of St. Ambrose University.
Defensive Coordinator/LB Coach
Coach Clark is entering his first season at ASU and has plenty of knowledge of the Lone Star Conference. He is joining the Rams after spending the 2018 season as the Asst. Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/defensive line coach at Tarleton State University. Previous to Tarleton, Coach Clark spent eight years as the head coach at Western New Mexico University. Before WNMU, he was the defensive line coach and strength & conditioning coordinator at Colorado School of Mines. He earned his bachelor's and master's degree from St. Ambrose University.
Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach
Coach Kilmer is entering his first season at ASU and will be the offensive coordinator as well as the quarterbacks coach. He joins the Rams after 3 seasons at Bowling Green University as the Co-Offensive Coordinator & the wide receivers coach. Prior to Bowling Green, Coach Kilmer was the quality control coach after previously serving as an offensive graduate assistant. Coach Kilmer earned his bachelor's degree in History and his master's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Tech University.
Wide Receiver Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Coach Johnson is entering his fourth season as ASU's wide receiver coach/recruiting coordinator. Prior to ASU, coach Johnson spent five seasons as Wide Receivers coach at Texas State University. Prior to Texas State, Johnson spent a season as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky State in 2010. He earned an associate degree at Kemper Military Institute, a bachelor’s degree at Western Kentucky and a master’s degree at Sul Ross State University.
Offensive Line Coach
Coach Lewis will be entering his third season as ASU's offensive line coach. Prior to being named the offensive line coach, coach Lewis was a student assistant and graduate assistant for the Rams assisting with the offensive line and tight ends. Coach Lewis played for the Rams in 2012 & 2013 while earning his bachelor degree from Angelo State University. He also earned his master's degree from Angelo State University.
Defensive Backs Coach
James Thomas Jr.
Coach Thomas will be entering his first season as ASU's defensive backs coach. Prior to ASU, coach Thomas was the defensive coordinator at Clarion University (PA) for 3 years. His defense was nationally ranked in interceptions, takeaways, red zone defense and opponent fourth down conversions. Coach Thomas coached at Western New Mexico for six seasons serving as the defensive coordinator his last two years in Silver City. He begin his coaching career at his alma mater of Graceland University after his football and track career was completed. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education & Health from Graceland. He completed his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Western New Mexico University.
Defensive Line Coach
Coach Tuifua will be entering his first season as ASU's defensive line coach. Prior to ASU, coach Tuifua was the defensive line coach at Azusa Pacific University (CA) for 5 years. He lead the 2016 defensive unit which ranked as Division II's sixth-best scoring defense, surrendering just 16 points per game. They also ranked third nationally in sacks (4.17 per game) and turnover margin while advancing to the program's first Division II playoff appearance. A Hawaii native, Coach Tuifua played his first two seasons of college football at Pasadena City College before finishing up his college career at Azusa Pacific. He earned his Sociology degree from Azusa Pacific University.
Offensive Graduate Assistant/RB's
A Frisco native, Coach Glover worked one season as a wide receivers coach at St. Ambrose University before returning to ASu this past season. He has coached 5 All-Conference players (3 Wide Receivers/2 Running Backs). He works with the ASU Running Backs & plans to pursue a coaching career. Coach Glover graduated from Angelo State with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and is pursuing a Master's degree in Curriculum Instruction.
Offensive Graduate Assistant/TE's
Coach Gillespie begins his second season at Angelo State as a graduate assistant, working with the Tight Ends. Gillespie spent the 2017 season at Southeastern University in Florida as the outside receivers coach. The team spent the season ranked among the top 5 in multiple offensive categories including No. 1 in scoring offense and No. 3 in total offense per game. During the 2016 season, Gillespie worked as a quality control coach at Texas State University. In 2015, Gillespie worked as an offensive quality control coach at West Texas A&M University. Gillespie has also coached on offense with the Amarillo Venom, a professional indoor football team. He played college football at Eastern New Mexico University, and began his coaching career there after a career-ending injury in 2013. He earned his bachelor degree from Eastern New Mexico & is now pursuing his master's degree.
Defensive Graduate Assistant/LB's
Coach O'Bryan will be entering his third season as a graduate assistant football coach for the Rams. A Marion native, O'Bryan is a Texas Tech graduate who is pursuing a Master's degree in Education in Coaching and Athletic Administration at ASU. He earned his degree in Kinesiology at Texas Tech. He works with the Linebackers and special teams for the Rams and plans to pursue a coaching and athletic administration career.

Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services/Student Success
Joe’l is the Angelo State University Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services and Student Success where she has helped ASU student-athletes along their academic path since 2013.
Sefcik oversees academic support initiatives for all of ASU student-athletes including tutorials, testing programs and advising programs. She works closely with coaches and athletic administration to guide student-athletes toward academic success.
