MEET THE STAFF
HEAD COACHCoach Girsch is in his 5th season as the Head Football Coach of the Rams in 2024! He has spent 20+ years as a college football coach overall. In this 2021 season, he led the Rams to an 11-3 record and earned AFCA D2 Region 4 Coach of Year honors. He was the defensive coordinator for the Rams for 5 seasons before being named Head Coach. Prior to joining Angelo State University, Girsch had spent 18 years coaching at St. Ambrose University, with his last 6 as the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. He was named the MSFA Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 2008. He is a graduate of St. Ambrose University.

Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach
Coach Kilmer is in his 5th season at ASU as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach. He joined the Rams after 3 seasons at Bowling Green University as the Co-Offensive Coordinator & the wide receivers coach. Prior to Bowling Green, Coach Kilmer was the quality control coach after previously serving as an offensive graduate assistant. Coach Kilmer earned his bachelor's degree in History and his master's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Tech University.

Recruiting Coordinator/Wide Receiver Coach
Coach Johnson is in his 8th season as ASU's Recruiting Coordinator/Wide Receiver Coach. Prior to ASU, coach Johnson spent 5 seasons as the Wide Receivers coach at Texas State University. Prior to Texas State, Johnson spent a season as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky State University in 2010. He earned an associate degree at Kemper Military Institute, a bachelor’s degree at Western Kentucky and a master’s degree at Sul Ross State University.

Offensive Line Coach
Coach Atwell is in his 2nd season as ASU's Offensive Line coach in 2024. Prior to being named the offensive line coach, coach Atwell was the offensive line coach at Snow College (UT). He was graduate assistant working with the offensive line at Western Kentucky University. Coach Atwell earned his bachelor and master's degree from Western Kentucky University.

Defensive Backs Coach
Coach Brown is in his 1st season as ASU's Defensive Backs Coach. Prior to becoming the defensive backs coach, Brown coached the defensive backs at Virginia Union University for the 2022 season. Prior to Virginia Union, Brown served as a graduate assistant at Louisiana Tech during the 2021 season. This was after coaching the Cornerbacks at Lamar University. Coach Brown earned his bachelor's and MBA from Webber International University where he served as the defensive backs coach for 3 seasons.

Linebackers CoachCoach O'Bryan is in his 6th season at ASU and his 2nd season as the Linebackers Coach in 2024. He previously was a graduate assistant coaching the linebackers for the Rams helping turn us into one of the best defensive teams in Division II, coaching All-American Hunter Kyle along with LSC All-Conference recipients Daron Allman, Josh Quinton, and Donavyn Jackson. Hunter Kyle was also named the Lone Star Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. A Marion native, O'Bryan is a Texas Tech graduate who is pursuing a Master's degree in Education in Coaching and Athletic Administration at ASU. He earned his degree in Kinesiology at Texas Tech. He works with the Linebackers and special teams for the Rams and plans to pursue a coaching and athletic administration career.

Defensive Graduate Assistant/Asst. Def. Backs
Gilbert Gildersleeve
Twitter: @Coach_G4 Email: [email protected] Recruiting Area: Houston & surrounding areas Coach Gildersleeve is in his 4th year at ASU and in his 1st year as a graduate assistant working with the Defensive Backs. During his tim playing for the Rams, he was also able to play in the FSC Bowl as well as the FBS Tropical Bowl. After graduating in 2019 with a bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology, he is currently working towards his master's in Athletic Academic Advising Certification. He plans to further his career and become a Football Coach.

Defensive Graduate Assistant/Asst. Def. Line
Martavuis Dotson
Twitter: @bigdotshow Email: [email protected] Recruiting Area: Texas Coach Dotson is entering into his 1st year at ASU as a graduate assistant. Prior to becoming a graduate assistant for ASU, Coach Dotson was a High School Defensive Line Coach at Arlington Seguin during the 2022 season. Prior to Arlington Seguin, Dotson played Defensive End at Grambling State University from 2017-2021. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation in 2020 and his Master's degree in Sports Administration in 2022 from Grambling State University.

Head Strength & Conditioning CoachCoach Borland joined the RamFam in May of 2021 bringing over 5 years of experience as a Strength & Conditioning Coach. Before ASU, Coach Borland was the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo for 3 years. At CSU-Pueblo, he designed and implemented individual yearly programs to enhance athletic and sport performance with a focus on movement mechanics, form & injury prevention. Prior to CSU-Pueblo, Coach Borland was an Assistant Strength Coach (Football) at the University of Buffalo for 9 months. At Buffalo he designed & implemented in-season strength programs for football. He also programmed and managed strength & conditioning, nutrition, injury prevention, strength/power development and body awareness for 110 athletes to meet team goals. He earned his Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Health & Human Performance.

Joe'l oversees academic support initiatives for all of ASU student-athletes including tutorials, testing programs and advising programs. She works closely with coaches and athletic administration to guide student-athletes toward their academic major & success. |
